IIT Rice Campus Computer Center Operating Policies
General: The Johannesen Computer Center is the main computer lab for IIT's Rice Campus and operates under the direction of Rice Campus' Assistant Director for Information Technology. Equipment for the Johannesen Computer Center is provided and supported by IIT Computing and Network Services (CNS) Client Services who provides computer laboratory services to students, faculty, and staff of the Illinois Institute of Technology. These services focus on providing labs for classroom use, general use areas primarily for student use outside of regularly scheduled classes, and network printing services with high-speed laser printers.

Locations and Contacting the Computer Labs: The Johannesen Computer Center is located in rooms 207, 208, and 210 on the second floor of the Rice Campus, 201 E. Loop Road, Wheaton, IL. Room 208 is also the distribution point for networked printing jobs. The Johannesen Computer Center also supports the computer lab in Room 244.

Staff: The Johannesen Computer Center staff members are part-time undergraduate and graduate student employees of the Rice Campus, and are directed by the Rice Campus Assistant Director for Information Technology. The Johannesen Computer Center staff is supported by the full-time staff of the Office of Technology Services.

Johannesen Computer Center Policies:

Lab Hours:

During the Academic year and Summer session, the Johannesen Computer Center is open daily Monday through Friday 10:00am to 10:00pm, and Saturday 8:00am to 6:00pm (except on holidays). Hours may be curtailed during breaks; check the center for the posting of operating hours for these periods.

Lab Scheduling:

The Johannesen Computer Center computer labs are available for use by departments and organizations of IIT for classes and seminars.

Class Scheduling:

Laboratories for scheduled classes must be reserved through the Rice Campus Administrator. If an instructor desires to use a OTS lab for a class that was not formally scheduled for lab use, the instructor in this case must contact the Rice Campus Administrator at (630) 682-6040 or e-mail kozi@iit.edu to schedule the class. Scheduling in this case will be made according to availability of time slots and on a first-come, first-served basis.

IIT Staff/Student Organizational Use:

Requests for scheduling of Johannesen Computer Center labs for use by IIT student or staff organizations or departments can be made on a first-come, first-served basis through the Rice Campus Facilities Manager at (630) 682-6013 or by e-mail to stella@iit.edu. Student organizations may not charge IIT students, faculty, or staff for any use of the labs.

Non-profit/Community Organization Use:

Requests for scheduling of Johannesen Computer Center labs for use by non-profit or community organizations from outside IIT can be made through the Rice Campus Facilities Manager by calling (630) 682-6013 or faxing (630) 682-6010. Non-profit or community organizations may not charge IIT students, faculty, or staff for any use of the labs.

Business/Professional Organization Use:

Requests for scheduling of labs for use by a business or a professional organization must be made in writing to the Rice Campus Facilities Manager. An appropriate charge for such use will be quoted upon request. Requests may be made by email to stella@iit.edu or by mail to:

Computer Center Use Policies:

Johannesen Computer Center users must comply with all these policies and all  OTS and IIT Computing Policies at all times.

Access:

The Johannesen Computer Center is open to IIT faculty, staff, and students. Anyone outside this community is not allowed to use our labs unless provided with a special permit from OTS or the Rice Campus Assistant Director for Information Technology. The Johannesen Computer Center is not open to the general public.

When using the Johannesen Computer Center, users are subject to verification by a staff member and may be asked for a proper ID that identifies his/her relationship to IIT. If the user cannot provide valid identification indicating a relationship with the university, that user will be asked to leave the computer center. Demonstrating the ability to log into Web for Students, Faculty or Staff is considered sufficent proof of IIT relationship but users may still be required to provide some identification to demonstrate that they are the person that they have logged in as.

When a computer center room is scheduled for use by a class or an event, only users registered into that section of the class or that event may use that room; all other users must clear out of the room. Other users may only be present in the room with the express permission of the instructor or teaching assistant responsible for conducting the class or event.

Users may not remain in the computer center after the end of normal operating hours.

Assistance to Users:

Johannesen Computer Center staff members will provide all users with any assistance required in accessing computers in the lab. Staff members will provide assistance in running the various software packages installed on CNS lab computers, however, staff members will not solve homework problems for students nor can they spend so much time assisting them that they neglect the computer center desk.

Conduct in the Johannesen Computer Center:

To facilitate an educational environment and to ensure the best use of computer center computers, no games and no disturbances (loud or boisterous talking or any other actions that may disturb other users) are allowed in the labs.

File Storage:

Floppy drivse and Zip drives are no longer provided for users to load and store files. Users may temporarily store files on drive e:\, the "User" drive, but must be aware that hard drives are cleaned on subsiqent reboots. There is absolutely no guarantee that a file stored on a hard drive will be present during the next session. Files stored on drives c:\ or d:\ will be deleted whenever they are found. Users are strongly urged to store lab projects and other files on Zip disks or on USB removable thumb drives.

Food and Drink:

Food and drinks are not permitted in the Johannesen Computer Center. Computer center staff members only may consume food and drinks behind the computer center desk.

Peripherals:

Without the express permission of the Rice Campus Assistant Director for Information Technology, no user is allowed to attach any peripheral devices such as a Jazz, Ditto or Zip drive to any Johannesen Computer Center computer. However, headphones (but not speakers) may be connected to any Johannesen Computer Center computer if a user wishes to listen to computer or CD audio while using the machine. Users may also connect and use portable USB drives including USB thumb or keychain drives as long as no installation of drivers is required.

Policy Violations:

Violators of these policies will be asked by a staff member to stop the violation; if the violation continues, violators will be asked to leave the Johannesen Computer Center. If necessary, public safety will be called to escort such violators from the computer center. If violators refuse to leave with public safety officers, Wheaton police will be called to arrest them for criminal trespass.

Telephone Use:

The phone at the Johannesen Computer Center desk is only for use by staff members; computer center users who need to make a local call may use a phone in the Rice Campus Main Office on the first floor. For other calls or calls outside of Rice Campus Main Office operating hours, computer center users should use the pay phone outside of the computer center.

Print Jobs:

Printouts from Johannesen Computer Center printers will be placed onto the lab desk no more than 10 minutes after being printed. Print jobs older than 2 hours will be be moved to one of the desks along the south wall of Room 208 once every hour, such that the desk does not become too cluttered with jobs. Print jobs printed from the same computer within a fifteen minute interval will be piled together. (A computer's print jobs may be identified by the IP Number and the DNS name on the cover sheet.)

Software Installation:

Curricular Software Installations:

Instructors must supply CNS with the name(s) of software packages they will need installed in OTS labs at least two to three months prior to the semester in which they desire to use the software. Instructors are responsible for installation of any software required for their class after a semester has commenced. With the express permission of the Rice Campus Assistant Director for Information Technology, instructors may have students or teaching assistants install properly licensed software under their direction and supervision.

Licenses:

CNS does carry a range of licensed software. However, if the required software is not among those licensed by CNS, it is the responsibility of the instructor's department to provide a version of the software licensed for the proper number of users to OTS prior to installation of the software.

Johannesen Computer Center User Software Installation:

Computer center users shall not install software on any Johannesen Computer Center PC unless it is under the direction of an instructor.

Specifically Prohibited Software:

Installation and use of instant messaging software such as AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger is prohibited. Installation and use of peer-to-peer music or file trading software such as Bit-Torrent, Bearshare, Gnutella is prohibited. Users found to be running prohibited software may lose their Computer Center privileges even if the software is run without installation.

Johannesen Computer Center Staff Members:

Staff Member Policies:

Although Johannesen Computer Center staff members are Rice Campus employees, they are subject to all policies governing CNS Student Employees; these policies may be found at http://ots.iit.edu/policies. All Johannesen Computer Center staff members are responsible for knowledge of and compliance with theses policies.

The Johannesen Computer Center Desk:

Two staff members are assigned to the Johannesen Computer Center during all operating hours. One staff members should be in place at the the computer center desk at all times. They are there for security, user support and distribution of print jobs. No one except staff members should be behind the desk at any time. The phone at the desk is for Johannesen Computer Center business; staff members may use the phone for short personal calls only (three minutes or less) which may be necessary for family liaison or urgent business.
